Multilingual Domains Languages covered Returning Customers Working Samples: (Chinese Simplified) 公司.繁體中文 (Chinese Traditional) 会社.日本語 (Japanese) 회사.한국어 (Korean) עברית.קום (Hebrew) العربية.شركة (Arabic) FAQs What are multilingual domains? Who would use them? What languages are supported? How much do they cost? How do I enter non-English characters? Can I re-sell these names? Do I need to know a language to register a name in it? How does this differ from Verisign's Multilingual Domain Name Testbed? |
(You can copy and paste from the translator into this form)
ALTERNATIVELY, YOU CAN PRINT AND FAX THIS FORM TO: (001) 626 844 4334 ENCODING METHOD: To ensure accuracy check encoding is set to "UTF-8" before transmitting the above form. Failure to ensure this may result in errors in transmission of your selected name. Your browser should automatically be set to UTF-8 (if you can see multilingual characters in the form above, then it is probably set correctly). But if you wish to make sure, then: Internet Explorer users select VIEW | ENCODING | UNICODE (UTF-8) Netscape users select VIEW | CHARACTER SET | UNICODE (UTF-8) WHAT FORM ARE THESE NAMES IN? All of the launch XTNS multilingual domains are designed to read right to left. The languages of the launch range (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew & Arabic) are all normally read either right to left, or top to bottom and then right to left. Thus the "upper" level of each of these XTNS domains is to the LEFT of the dot, not to the right of it. For example, the launch Japanese domain is "会社" and it is written in the form "会社.yourmlname" Further, XTNS is also working on an Enhanced Address Bar feature that will enable all XTNS Chinese, Japanese and Korean names to be entered vertically rather than horizontally. News of this additional enhancement will be announced shortly. WHAT DO THESE FIRST DOMAIN EXTENSIONS MEAN? These first domain extensions are general terms we have selected for a corporation or entity doing business on the Internet. So they translate roughly to "company.name" WHO CAN APPLY? Anyone world-wide may submit a pre-registration application but if you own a trademark, service mark, or have some other intellectual property claim to a given name, then this is a key opportunity for you to secure your name within any given multilingual domain. HOW LONG WILL THIS PHASE LAST? This pre-registration phase has been extended and now closes Midnight December 14, 2001 (PST). WHAT IS THE COST? These ML Domain Namespaces cost just $30 per year. WHO GET'S PRIORITY? In the event that there is more than one application for the same name XTNS will give priority to the first person to file their application. However, priority will be given to those who have demonstrated an intellectual property ownership in a name. WHAT LANGUAGES CAN I REGISTER A NAME IN? In this first phase, XTNS is offering six different domains (Chinese Big5, Chinese GB, Japanese, Korean, Hebrew & Arabic). However, within each domain XTNS permits you to register in any language or character set. You can thus mix languages, or even use plain ASCII (normal Roman "English" letters), or your choice of many other supported symbols and characters. ARE THERE ANY "FORBIDDEN" CHARACTERS? Yes. However, the application forms on this site in this first phase will permit you to enter any characters at all and do not check for forbidden characters. There is thus no guarantee that because the application was successfully transmitted to XTNS that any given name is available for registration. Examples of forbidden characters include spaces, slashes, dots and the @ sign. There are other restrictions on which names and characters may be registered, details of which are in our policy document which also contains the terms of this pre-registration process. CAN I USE SYMBOLS? Yes, Unicode supports all manner of characters and symbols: mathematical ones, punctuation (except forbidden characters), and symbols such as smiley faces, and so forth. DO THESE NAMES RESOLVE RIGHT NOW? The system is fully operational even during this pre-registration period. There are working sample domains in the left panel of this page (they are set to resolve to the main Multilingual Domains section of the XTNS site, but could resolve anywhere). These samples are set up to resolve directly via our name servers, but if you have IE configured to accept multilingual characters in the Address Bar, then you can cut and paste any of these examples into the Address Bar itself and see them resolve directly from there as with any regular domain name. However, newly registered names as a result of this pre-registration process will not be activated until the close of the pre-registration period. WHAT METHODS OF PAYMENT ARE ACCEPTED? XTNS prefers to process payment by credit card, however we will also accept checks and money orders (domestic U.S. only) and for larger, bulk orders XTNS will accept wire transfers of funds.
